An Asian Boxer Mantis (Theopropus elegans?) female.
New info: This may be a Creobroter gemmatus instead!
Check out the full view to see that she actually has compound eyes. The Black eye-spot is only an optical illusion. She looks as if she always has her eyes on the camera.

Proud Stance by ~biawak Not only that he's highly concerned about the techniques of taking photographs, but he is also very knowledgeable about his objects. We can see his love for nature through his gallery which is filled with awesome macro photos. Thanks for sharing that wonderful portrait of an Asian Boxer Mantis female. Good Job! There's something about praying mantis' that make them seem like very smart and cunning insects. That's probably why they're my favorite insects in the animal kingdom. So, can you tell me, are they or are they not among the most intelligent insects? And if not, what would you say is?

WOW!!
I love mantises, so these photographs are a real treat for me! I saw one once (they are not where i live), + she was set on my hand + a friend was moving his finger + i was so amazed at how they follow objects with their eyes:eyes:, that my own eyes teared up (emotion from beauty) + i could not see her so well then.

You have a very gallery:D

Hi Daniel,
yes, she was alive. In fact she laid some eggs a few days later. I did not keep the babies, they were all over my back yard for a few days.

nice macro. I'm trying to save up for a macro lens. I see you use both canons and nikons. Have a preference?

Thanks Clayton.
I use mainly Nikon for digital SLR. My Canon is a compact A700. In the old film days I used both Canon FD and Nikon systems. If you're looking for a good macro lens, research the reviews on the 90mm Tamron macro lens. Very sharp and a lot cheaper than Canon or Nikon lenses. The Sigma 150mm macro is also good. I use the MicroNikkor because I had it since the days of film so I don't need to buy a new one!
