Defensive by biawak Defensive by biawak
A Weaver ant (Oecophylla smaragdina) worker in a defensive posture. There's a colony of these guys in the empty lot next to my house.

Normally, I don't really like ants. But this makes me respect them just a little more :)

I love how the arch of the ant matches perfectly with the green in the backround. It fits perfectly.

I've been told that people have purposely placed weaver ant nests into fruit trees to protect them from other insects and fruit thieves.
But the problem as I see it is, though, that, how on Earth do you get your fruit from the tree now that the weaver ants set up shop in it?

It's so cute! I feel like petting it, really. Do they bite?
I think the details are amazing. How long did you have to wait to get the ant to stop?

Excellent shot!
How did you manage this? Did you pick an ant to pick on or just sit and wait for one to get pissed at you?
